Update! No need to watch out for shepherds and Kings!
The 'Star in the East' below turned out to be a fuel dump from the upper stage of the Atlas Centaur NROL 35 mission, launched shortly before from California.
Still: very interesting to see, and impressive that so many of my star-gazey friends around the world saw it too!
