I'd arranged to meet Norman and Mike O'Hara (AKA 'Red') at Strumpshaw this morning, so stopped off en route at the Church Lane poplars to hang out a lure or two! Within minutes there were six Hornet Clearwings investigating - I'll never grow tired of this marvellous creatures. Some real Hornets turned up later!
At the Fen a couple of hours walking round added some decent insects: Silver-washed Fritillaries in the woods, lots of White Admirals, the first Southern and Brown Hawkers of the year and all the other expected odonata. Despite a good bash with the lures, none of last week's clearwings put in an appearance for Norman...
