The Sumerian goddess Ishtar was usually depicted with a crescent headdress: this wasn't meant to represent the Moon, but rather the planet Venus. When - as at the moment - Venus is on the same side of the Sun as the Earth (and hence much closer) you can easily see its crescent phases. These shots were taken at 07.30 today.
