Last night I dodged the cloud banks to attempt to photograph the beautiful crescent Moon and Mercury. Despite intensive searching I failed to locate the tiny planet: I did see some bright meteors, however. These were possibly a little early for eta Aquarids.
In a few day's time early risers have the opportunity - weather permitting - to see and photograph a total lunar eclipse. Optimum time will be between 4.00 and 5.00am, as the Moon sets around dawn.
