Back in the fifties, sociologists and psychologists began to question the impact of much of the mass housing that was being thrown up in new town and urban renewal developments. It was strongly suggested that, even in the suburbs, people needed some green space around them. This seems to have been conveniently forgotten by the current crop of cash-hungry property developers, who cram four and five-bedroom houses together with absolutely no gardens to separate them....
Linda and I bought our tiny bungalow twenty-odd years ago, chiefly because it has a compact but un-overlooked garden: we've spent thousands of hours remodelling and planting and it's at this time of year we're glad we did! On a sunny afternoon like yesterday, there's nothing nicer than sharing a glass of wine with friends and enjoying the colours and sounds of a garden.
