For obvious reasons, I can't say exactly where, but while Linda and I were enjoying coffee and a cake just a couple of miles from our front door this morning, we were treated to the unmistakeable call of a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. After a minute or two a response came from a patch of woodland even closer to our table! The pair moved frequently, coming within twenty yards at times: I had no camera, just binoculars, and was eventually rewarded with rear views of one individual looping off through the trees.
I mentioned the exciting find to the manager of the cafe, who replied that they'd been present for 'a couple of years at least!'
