Feed the birds!

As I sit here in the office, I can't help but notice the constant to-ing and fro-ing of birds onto the various feeders we have in the garden. It's amazing the lengths Wood Pigeons will go to for a bit of suet!

So far, these twenty species have visited us today:

Collared Dove
Wood Pigeon
Stock Dove
Rook
Jackdaw
Magpie
Jay
House Sparrow
Dunnock
Robin
Greenfinch
Chaffinch
Goldfinch
Great Tit
Blue Tit
Coal Tit
Blackbird
Starling
Sparrowhawk
Pheasant

The current total of birds that have landed in or flown directly across our small garden stands at 84 species, including breeding records for Redstart and Turtle Dove: not bad, in my humble opinion!

Given the recent controversy over feeding birds on RSPB reserves, I can't help but feel that the birdlovers of the UK are making a very significant contribution to the continued survival of our native birds
