Each year Linda and I intend to go and see the Hobby assembly at Lakenheath Fen, so - having been told by several birders that over 40 of these lovely little falcons were currently present - we decided to spend the evening there. Picking up neighbours Peter & Sue, we left home at 4.30 and were on site before 6.00pm.
Amazingly, despite the fabulous bright evening and a five-mile walk around the reserve, we failed to see a single Hobby! Lots of other good birds, though: four Cranes, perhaps a dozen Cuckoos and four Bitterns were the highlights, capped by a pub supper at Hockwold.
