Linda and I decided to make the most of the terrific weather for a run down to Hazelwood Common, near Aldeburgh. This delightful location has been hosting a frosty little Coues's Arctic Redpoll for a week or two, so a visit was overdue.
When we arrived just two other birders (old acquaintances from Suffolk) were on site: we joined up with them to scan through a newly-arrived flock of perhaps a dozen Redpolls. Among these was a classic fluffy snowball' which looked the part. Eventually it (or another - the flock was incredibly volatile) turned to reveal a white, unstreaked rump....
There were several different colour-ways of Redpoll on show: buffish breasts, pink breasts, white streaky breasts: highly educational! Around midday the trackway filled up with telescopes, causing the birds to scatter.
From there we moved north to Dunwich Beach. A long walk was entirely unproductive, while the Heath added a pair of somewhat distant Dartford Warblers to the day list.
