Rudston Neolithic monolith

Just a few miles from Flamborough is the tallest ancient monolith in the UK, so while we were there it seemed silly not to go and take a look!

At nearly thirty feet high, the monolith is very impressive, standing in a the churchyard of All Saints Church in the sleepy Yorkshire village of Rudston. It was carved from gritstone, apparently brought to the site from around 10 miles away (although it was possibly transported by a glacier during the last ice age.) Victorian excavations revealed that there is almost as much stone underground as above!

The region around Rudston is archaeologically rich, with other Neolithic / Bronze Age sites as well as nearby Roman villas: there is a Roman sarcophagus in the churchyard.
