I dragged myself out of bed at 4.00am today but not for the usual 'old man' reasons: instead I was looking for Geminid meteors.
Despite the bright waning Moon, I managed to see a few (tonight should be even better if it's clear for you! Gemini is due west before dawn) I was just going back indoors for a cuppa around 5.15 when I glanced to the east: my attention was immediately grabbed by a slow-moving fuzzy patch in Bootes. Not a comet (no naked eye ones around at the moment) and not a nebula or star cluster...
During the day, friends in the UK and US mailed / phoned / facebooked to say they'd seen it. Most strange!
