Meteors, planets and the aurora: was it worth just three hours sleep?

Well yes - it was! To be honest, the Perseids were somewhat disappointing for me, the shower producing just 16 meteors between 11.00pm and 01.30am, only a couple of which made it onto the camera. Still, one of these was a long-lasting bright green fireball that left a smoky trail.

The sky was fairly dark, so the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy were easily visible, as was a faint purplish aurora (and dozens of satellites, of course!)

I crawled out of bed at 03.30 to photograph the conjunction between Mars and the much brighter Jupiter: the two planets will be even closer tonight!
