Lammergeier: it seemed rude not to!

While Linda, Peter, Sue and I were having a very enjoyable lunch at the Oaklands in Norwich yesterday, I casually mentioned that the 'Derby Vulture' had relocated to the Fens. Sadly, Sue had pre-commitments, but Peter and Linda were all for an early dash along the A47.

Following an 8.00am start we weren't delayed at all: the journey to Thorney took just an hour and a half and we were watching this incredible raptor within minutes. The well-behaved crowd stuck to the roadsides and we all enjoyed terrific views of this unexpected visitor, as well as the good-natured banter at the expense of a few people who'd already seen the bird in the Peak District!

After a while it began to rain: I repositioned the car so that we could use it as a hide. This was a good move, because we were in the right place to watch it fly away westwards: it had a Red Kite as a travelling companion - look how small that seems! Breakfast at Thorney and then home - once again, the roads were virtually empty!
