The Moon and Jupiter

Shortly after sunset last night Jupiter and the Moon were close together in the southern sky: just like last Christmas, Saturn was nearby, and - if you have a clear southern horizon - you could have seen super-bright Venus to the west at around 5.30. Jupiter's four Galilean moons were strung out nicely, while a background star gave the appearance of a fifth. Later on, Orion (possibly everyone's favourite constellation) was a splendid sight in the south east.

Advance notice: there will be a lunar eclipse next week (19th) The Moon will pass into the Earth's shadow just before dawn, and some reddening of the Moon should be visible from around 6.00am. If you have a clear western (or even north-western) horizon, you might catch a glimpse. Next year's total lunar eclipse should be a lot better!
