Out for a few 'jars with Sue and Peter!

Friends Sue and Peter joined Linda and me for our annual evening visit to a north coast heath in search of Nightjars. Arriving before dusk, we walked around the usual 'best area' and were rewarded quite early on by tentative churring. Miraculously the sky cleared and, instead of the predicted showers, it was a bright, moonlit evening. Linnets were everywhere and, as well as the usual songbirds and pigeons, we also heard or saw Yellowhammers, a Woodcock and a Kestrel. Once the skies began to darken the churring and 'kewick-ing' began in earnest, with birds all around us. It's hard to tell exactly how many were present, but certainly double figures: I managed one photo of a bird that flew past just ten feet in front of me. As we were leaving, we stopped near the well-known white cottage to listen to a pair of churring birds just yards from the path: one of these launched itself over our heads, giving the best views of the evening. Great fun, in great company, with more Nightjars in a session than I have ever encountered.
