Great Green Bush-cricket: a rare beast in Norfolk!

Last night, good friends Garth and Jenny met me at a location in the Yare Valley where there is a thriving population of Great Green Bush-crickets. These impressive orthopterids are around 6cm in length, making them one of the largest insects in Great Britain. They apparently produce a very loud stridulation, but a lifetime's rock and roll means that neither Garth nor I can hear them! Luckily Jenny can: within a second of getting out of the cars she'd pinned down three crickets.

All in all we saw (I think) six - all males. Apart from reports of isolated individuals, this is probably the most northerly colony in the UK: it seems to be flourishing along the hedgerows and verges at this beautiful spot.
