I've tried all kinds of ad hoc methods of photographing the Sun, but haven't enjoyed much success. It's great looking at sunspots, but I was keen to record them: in the end I ordered a sheet of Baader professional solar filter foil and made my own mask.
(I need hardly say, I hope, that you should never look at the Sun with or without optical aids, nor ever point your precious DSLR at it either!)
The results are very encouraging! A bit of tweaking with the camera settings and experimentation with Paintshop Pro and I managed some half-decent images of today's numerous small sunspots.
