A great day out on the North Coast with Brian. We started the day at Choseley, where a solitary Corn Bunting allowed itself to be photographed. From there we moved on to Thornham, where the Twite flock was very obliging, feeding by the carpark and drinking in the puddles. Titchwell was surprisingly quiet, both in terms of small birds and people: a walk along the beach to Thornham Point added Long-tailed Ducks (at least five) Scaup and Goldeneye to the daylist, as well as lots of waders including several beautiful Grey Plovers. The ditch near Reception held a confiding Water Rail, but we missed a Merlin while we enjoyed an early lunch.
The drive east towards home was punctuated by a stop by the side of the road at Holkham to grab a quick snap of a Great White Egret, before finishing the day at Stiffkey Fen. A longish vigil by the little pond produced only Bullfinches, so we carried on to the sea wall. The large dyke contained a flock of ten Little Grebes: it was some time before I realised that one of them was a Red-necked Grebe!
As we walked back to the car the Dusky Warbler flew along the hedgerow: I saw it really well, but the photos were, to say the least, unimpressive!
