Original RA Richardson bird art: find of the decade!

For anyone 'of a certain age' there is one name that is synonymous with Norfolk birding, and that is Richard Alan Richardson. His book illustrations, studies and framed artwork have inspired generations of birders and bird artists: certainly they were an important factor in encouraging me to illustrate my bird logs with paintings and drawings of the birds I'd seen.

Today Linda and I made our customary visit to the biannual antiques fair at the Norfolk Showground. Imagine how thrilled we were to discover, tucked away in a gloomy corner, a framed piece of the great man's original artwork! Even better, it was priced below the cost of a couple of bottles of wine. The dealer knew nothing about the painting, just that he'd bought it (and half a dozen works by Norfolk artists) at a small rural auction.
