Just before going to bed I grabbed a couple of shots of some of the beautiful things you can see in the Winter skies. Jupiter is still a dazzling object in the south west: last night its four largest moons were strung out in a row. Mars is nearly overhead at midnight, close to the Pleiades star cluster: its desert surface gives it an even brighter red colour than the nearby giant star Aldebaran. To the south east everyone's favourite constellation Orion still dominates the sky, the beautiful M42 nebula in 'his' sword is one of the few you can see with the naked eye.
Enjoy them while you can: they'll soon be replaced by the spring and summer constellations!
Don't forget: you can click on an image to enlarge it!
