A run along the North Norfolk Coast

There are distinct advantages in having a workhorse car like our Zafira: you can put loads of stuff in the back for business trips or visits to the recycling centre without worrying about the odd bit of grime or scuffing. Similarly, you can happily park it anywhere and drive down the bumpiest track: very useful for birding in East Anglia!

I crawled out of bed early enough to arrive at West Runton before the ticket machine was in operation: I had to wait until 7.02 before it would accept any money! Despite the early start and a three mile circuit of the car park and cliff areas, yesterday's Hoopoe seemed to have departed: just a Kestrel, a few Whitethroats and a Skylark or two weren't much compensation! A well-marked Jackdaw looked a bit like one of the eastern race birds...

Given the fact that I was up here anyway, I decided to make the long haul west to Choseley for a gander at the trip of seven Dotterel. In fact, I found them straight away, but they were as far from the vantage point as possible, hanging around across a ploughed field with a couple of Golden Plover.

A move down the hill to Titchwell added a couple of year ticks: Spotted Redshank and Kittiwake, while it was good to see Little Ringed Plovers nice and close. Still lots of Brents around, as well as good numbers of Swifts
