Stone Curlews, Hobbies and Bitterns: terrific outing to Lakenheath

Peter, Sue, Linda and I enjoyed a great outing to the south of the county to connect with the annual Hobby gathering at RSPB Lakenheath. On the way we enjoyed decent views of two Stone Curlews and their chicks at Weeting Heath, where a Eurasian Curlew was also incubating eggs.

The walk through Lakenheath to Joist Fen was enlivened by half a dozen Cuckoos, loads of Garden Warblers, Blackcaps and Whitethroats, while star bird was a Bittern that flew nearly overhead.

Ten minutes at the watchpoint revealed at least fifty Hobbies, usually too high or distant for photography, but great to see. We carried on along the riverbank to a region of dense bushes and scrub where, after a bit of a wait, we eventually heard a Nightingale: close, but never visible! After a picnic we headed home in bright sunshine: how variable our weather can be!
