It's been an incredible Summer in East Anglia: despite a lowish year list of just 150-odd, the total includes Bee-eater, Roller, Glossy Ibis, Pacific Golden Plover etc etc. While it is absolutely fantastic to see and photograph such incredible birds, it's just as rewarding to come across 'real' native species that have become increasingly difficult to connect with. This is especially the case when they are close to home!
As you'll have read earlier (if you're a regular visitor to BotH) both Turtle Doves, Red Kites and Common Cranes have nested within five miles of my front door: yesterday I was pleased to add Spotted Flycatcher to the roll of honour! A friend also mentioned that a second pair of Kites were holding territory nearby and these obliged by doing a few circuits of their chosen woodland. Frustratingly, I've been shown photos of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers that are even closer, but my informant - not surprisingly! - won't divulge the exact location!
