A couple of hours at the Fen in the company of Brian, Adrian & Mel was surprisingly productive: on a good day, Strumpshaw can provide a real variety of wildlife experiences.
First of these today was a hunting Barn Owl that quartered the meadow for a good half an hour. A brief watch from Fen Hide produced Bearded Tit and Water Rail, as well as the fascinating sight of a Heron spearing quite a large Tench.
Other birds seen included Bittern, Grasshopper Warbler, Kingfisher and Hobby, while dragonflies were represented by Scarce and Broad-bodied Chasers as well as Black-tailed Skimmer and Norfolk Hawker. A few Swallowtails charged up and down Lackford Run.
